Three religious families in Georgia are being told to choose between their children's Catholic education or thousands of dollars in education funding.Georgia's Promise Scholarship, created in 2024, gives eligible families up to $6,500 per child for the school of their choice. To qualify, a child must first spend two consecutive semesters in a public school and must be assigned to a school the State has designated as failing. For the Tootles, the Sandses, and the McCalls, those terms are not an option. Pulling a child out of a thriving Catholic education and into a failing public school violates their obligations as Catholic parents, and it violates their religious rights. One family already watched a daughter change for the worse in public school, hiding her faith to fit in and falling behind in her classes. They pulled her out and enrolled her in a Catholic hybrid homeschool, where she thrived. Georgia now says her younger brother must go through the same public school before the family can even ask for help.Thousands of secular families have already used the scholarship to leave public schools for private ones, Catholic schools included. Georgia excuses some families from these requirements for secular seasons and refuses to excuse these families from religious ones. Of the $141 million budgeted for the program last year, roughly $50 million was spent Thomas More Society asks the court to declare the requirements unlawful, block their enforcement, and order the Georgia Student Finance Commission to award each family a scholarship. The application window closes August 31, so the families have also moved for a temporary restraining order.
